What is an SSL Certificate?

SSL Certificate – These small data files are added to web servers that then allow a website to use the HTTPS protocol. SSL certificates digitally connect a cryptographic key to an organization’s details. Originally, these were used to secure logins, data transfers, and credit card transactions, but have recently become the go-to system for websites, especially after the Google Chrome update that displays a warning message to users, if the certificate is not present.

An SSL Certificate (Secure Sockets Layer), also called a Digital Certificate, creates a secure link between a website and a visitor’s browser. By ensuring that all data passed between the two remains private and secure, SSL encryption prevents hackers from stealing private information such as credit card numbers, names, and addresses.

If you sell products or services on your website and accept credit cards online, you need an SSL Certificate for website security. If you don’t sell online but want to add credibility to your website, a Site Confirm Seal may be enough.

How Can an SSL Certificate Help My Online Business?

SSL certificates are used to create an encrypted channel between the client and the server. Transmission of such data as credit card details, account login information, any other sensitive information must be encrypted to prevent eavesdropping.

With an SSL certificate, data is encrypted prior to being transmitted via the Internet. Encrypted data can be decrypted only by the server to which you send it. This ensures that the information you submit to websites will not be stolen.

Starting from 06/08/2014, Google announced that having an SSL certificate installed on your website will increase your ranking position, which is another great reason to use an SSL.

The certificate itself represents base64 encoded data that contains information about the entity the certificate was issued for, public key required for encryption and digital signature verification, and a digital signature created with the private key of the certificate issuer. Types of SSL certificates

Three validation groups:

      1.Domain Validation Certificates

Requires a certificate applicant to prove his/her control over the domain name only. The issued certificate contains a domain name that was supplied to the Certification Authority within the certificate request.

      2. Organization Validation Certificates

Requires a certificate applicant to prove that his/her company is a registered and legally accountable business, and to pass domain validation. The issued certificate contains a domain and company name of the certificate applicant.

     3. Extended Validation Certificates

Includes validation requirements of two validation types mentioned above and additional requirements. The issued certificate contains a domain and company name of the certificate applicant.
