How Search Term Report Works
The Search Term Report (STR) is one of the most important optimization tools in Google Ads. While keywords are the terms you choose to bid on, search terms are what users actually typed into Google when your ad was triggered. The gap between these two is where PPC waste and opportunity both live. The STR is accessible in Google Ads under Keywords > Search Terms and shows each query, the matched keyword, match type used, impressions, clicks, click-through rate, conversions, and cost. Google introduced search term privacy thresholds in 2020, hiding queries with very low impression volume, typically queries accounting for 15-30% of total impressions may be hidden as "Other search terms" in smaller accounts.
Why Search Term Report Matters for B2B Marketing
For B2B advertisers, the STR is the ground truth of what your target market is actually searching for. Regular STR analysis surfaces two categories of actionable data: irrelevant queries (job seeker searches, competitor employee queries, consumer alternatives) that should be added as negative keywords, and new high-intent queries (variations and modifiers of your existing keywords, competitor comparison terms, use-case-specific queries) that should be added as new keywords or used to refine landing page targeting. Accounts that don't review the STR regularly are flying blind on both waste and opportunity.
Search Term Report: Best Practices & Strategic Application
STR review cadence and process: review weekly for campaigns using broad match or phrase match keywords, as these generate the most query variation; review bi-weekly for exact match-heavy campaigns; filter by spend threshold (e.g., show queries with >$5 in spend and 0 conversions) to prioritize high-waste terms; sort by conversion rate to identify high-performing queries to promote to exact match; add irrelevant terms to shared negative keyword lists immediately; and export monthly STR data to a keyword discovery worksheet to track long-tail opportunities over time.
Agency Perspective: Search Term Report in Practice
MV3 builds STR review into our weekly PPC management workflow for every client account. We use a color-coded classification system in our management sheets: red for immediate negatives, yellow for "watch" terms needing more data, and green for queries to promote to exact match. This systematic approach ensures the account's keyword architecture continuously improves based on real search behavior rather than stagnating after initial setup.
