Quick Answer
What is a website migration audit?

A website migration audit is a pre-launch technical review that maps every existing URL, redirect chain, tracking pixel, schema block, and backlink target on your current site, then compares them against the migration plan so nothing breaks at cutover. It produces a 1:1 redirect matrix, a tracking-preservation runbook, a schema migration checklist, a backlink-equity protection plan, and a launch-day checklist. These are the artifacts unmanaged migrations skip, and the reason they lose 30–60% of organic traffic.

What You Actually Get

Six Deliverables. Every Risk Mapped Before Go-Live.

Generic checklists don’t survive a real migration. Our audit is property-specific: every URL, every redirect, every pixel, every schema block, every high-value backlink target. All reviewed against your target platform’s constraints, then handed to your dev team as an executable runbook.

01
URL Mapping Audit

Full crawl of your live site plus GSC + Ahrefs URL export reconciled into one master inventory. Every canonical, alternate, paginated, and parameter URL classified by traffic, links, and business value so nothing important is orphaned at cutover.

02
1:1 Redirect Plan

A machine-readable 301 redirect matrix (CSV + regex rules) mapping every legacy URL to its new target. Fallback rules for /category/*, /author/*, and long-tail patterns. Chain depth ≤1, no 302s, no redirect loops. Validated against a staging crawl before launch.

03
Tracking Preservation

Full audit of GA4, GTM containers, conversion pixels (Meta, LinkedIn, Google Ads), consent-mode setup, and event schema. Migration runbook so no dataLayer.push, no goal, and no conversion attribution goes dark on launch day.

04
Schema Migration

Every JSON-LD block on your current site inventoried (Article, Product, FAQ, Organization, LocalBusiness, Breadcrumb, HowTo). Migration spec for the target platform (including llms.txt, sitemap, and robots directives), so entity signals survive the cutover.

05
Backlink Equity Protection

Your top 200–500 referring domains identified via Ahrefs. Every high-authority backlink target checked against the redirect matrix so no earned link points to a 404 on launch day. Outreach list for links pointing at unfixable URLs.

06
Launch-Day Checklist

A T-minus-14 through T-plus-30 runbook: staging QA, DNS TTL prep, robots.txt gating, GSC + Bing property setup, sitemap resubmit sequence, log-file monitoring, and daily-standup checkpoints for the first 2 weeks post-launch.

Five Artifacts. Every Risk Quantified Before Launch.

Not a generic checklist. A property-specific audit where every finding is grounded in your live crawl, your Ahrefs backlinks, your GSC performance, and your target platform’s constraints.

Deliverable 01

The Redirect Matrix

A one-row-per-URL CSV your dev team drops directly into your 301 config or reverse proxy. Every legacy URL classified by risk tier, mapped to its new target, and validated against a staging crawl before you touch DNS.

  • Full URL inventory reconciled from crawl + GSC + Ahrefs
  • Risk tier: P0 (top traffic + links), P1 (traffic OR links), P2 (long-tail)
  • 1:1 mapping for P0/P1, pattern fallbacks for P2
  • Chain depth ≤1 enforced, no 302s, no loops
  • Validation crawl on staging before DNS cutover

Deliverable 02

Backlink Equity at Risk

A ranked bar of your highest-authority referring domains and how many of their inbound links break under the current migration plan. Any unfixable URL enters a manual outreach list to reclaim the link.

Deliverable 04

URL Risk Heatmap

Every URL group on your site scored across five signals: organic traffic, referring domains, GSC clicks, ranking keywords, and revenue attribution. Dark-blue cells are the URLs your migration plan must not break. Pale cells can safely fall through to pattern rules.

Why this matters:

Most migration disasters are 80/20: a small set of high-value URLs gets misrouted while ten thousand long-tail pages are handled fine. The heatmap identifies the URLs where a broken redirect equals a measurable revenue hit. Those are the URLs that must survive cutover intact.

Deliverable 05

The audit is a fixed-scope, one-time engagement. Every commitment below is a line item in your SOW, not marketing copy.

5-Day Delivery Guarantee

Signed SOW to delivered runbook in 5 business days. Miss that, and your invoice is discounted 20% per business day late. No questions.

Quality Guarantee

Every audit ships under our senior team review. If any P0/P1 redirect or tracking finding is proven wrong post-launch, we rebuild that section free.

Money-Back on Setup

If the kickoff call reveals your migration is out of scope, we refund 100% of your fee inside 48 hours. No dispute, no fine print.

Strategy + Implementation

We Map the Landmines. Then We Execute the Cutover.

Consulting-only shops hand you a PDF and disappear the week before launch. Dev-only shops build without an SEO thesis and blow up your organic traffic. MV3 delivers both: a diagnostic pre-launch audit paired with the implementation team ready to run the cutover under the plan.

Strategy: The Audit

Every risk mapped, sequenced, and priced before you touch DNS.

The Migration Audit is the diagnostic. In 5 business days you get a defensible plan for zero traffic loss, sequenced by risk tier so the P0 fixes ship before the low-value URLs.

  • 1Full URL inventory reconciled from crawl + GSC + Ahrefs. Nothing important missed.
  • 21:1 redirect matrix (P0/P1) + pattern rules (P2), validated against a staging crawl.
  • 3Tracking + schema preservation runbook: pixels, dataLayer, JSON-LD, llms.txt, sitemaps.
  • 4Backlink equity risk report with reclaim outreach list for unfixable URLs.
  • 5T−14 → T+30 launch runbook delivered as Notion doc + 45-min review call.
Implementation: The Cutover

MV3 runs the migration so the audit findings actually ship.

Every finding maps to an MV3 implementation service. Convert to a full migration engagement inside the review call and we credit the audit fee against your migration scope.

  • 1Redirect deployment: 301 rules staged in .htaccess / nginx / edge / CDN, tested pre-DNS.
  • 2Tracking rebuild: GA4, GTM, Meta CAPI, LinkedIn, consent-mode v2. All live on cutover.
  • 3Schema + llms.txt deploy on the new platform, JSON-LD parity with legacy site.
  • 4Launch-day war room: sitemap resubmit, log-file watchdog, GSC delta monitoring.
  • 5T+30 delta report: identify + fix any residual 404s, tracking drift, or ranking loss.

Methodology

How We Run the Audit, Every Time.

Five stages. Same protocol every audit. Reproducible against post-launch delta checks so we can measure exactly what shifted. Not guess.

Fit Qualification

This Audit Is Not For You If…

The Migration Audit is a defensible, opinionated deliverable. It works for teams who want a pre-launch runbook they can execute against, not a generic checklist. If any of these apply, we’ll politely decline.

  • You want the cheapest audit on the market. MV3 is premium, not budget. Fiverr and Upwork will happily quote you $299.
  • You need it delivered in 48 hours. The audit is 5 business days minimum, no exceptions. Rush requests get declined.
  • You want a generic PDF template. Every audit is custom-scoped. Templates don’t catch platform-specific migration risks.
  • You expect us to build your redirect map without any access. At minimum we need read-only GSC, Ahrefs, and your target-platform staging URL.
  • Your migration is already live and you lost <5% of traffic. The audit fee likely exceeds the recovery value, so we’ll refer you elsewhere.

Still not sure if you’re a fit? Submit the form and we’ll tell you honestly on the kickoff call, before invoicing.

Frequently Asked

Questions Migration Teams Ask Us.

What is a website migration audit?
A pre-launch technical review that maps every existing URL, redirect, tracking pixel, schema block, and high-value backlink target on your current site, then compares them against your migration plan so nothing breaks at cutover. You get a 1:1 redirect matrix, a tracking-preservation runbook, a schema migration spec, a backlink protection plan, and a T−14 through T+30 launch checklist.
When should we run the audit?
Ideally 4–6 weeks before your planned cutover. That leaves time to build and validate the redirect matrix on staging, coordinate DNS TTL reduction, and correct target-platform tracking gaps before launch. Two weeks is the minimum. Anything shorter, and P0 findings may not ship before go-live.
What kinds of migrations does this cover?
Platform replatform (e.g. WordPress → Webflow, Shopify → headless), domain change or rebrand, subdomain-to-subfolder consolidation, HTTPS moves, URL-structure overhauls, WordPress theme rebuilds where permalink structure changes, and mergers where two sites collapse into one. Ecommerce catalog moves are covered but may quote higher for large SKU counts.
What if we already launched?
We still run the audit, but as a post-launch recovery. We crawl the live new site + the archived legacy URLs (via Wayback / GSC / Ahrefs), rebuild the redirect matrix retroactively, and identify every broken URL that lost traffic. Recovery is possible but slower than pre-launch prevention.
Do you handle the actual migration?
The audit itself is diagnostic. You get the plan. If you want MV3 to execute the redirects, tracking rebuild, and schema deploy under our audit runbook, we quote that as a separate implementation engagement (typically 2–6 weeks). Convert to implementation inside the review call and we credit the audit fee against the scope.
Which platforms have you audited?
WordPress (Gutenberg, Kadence, Elementor, headless), Shopify (2.0 + headless), Webflow, HubSpot CMS, Squarespace, Wix, Craft, Contentful, Sanity, Next.js / Astro / Nuxt headless builds, and legacy custom PHP / .NET stacks. If your platform isn’t on this list, mention it in the kickoff and we’ll confirm coverage before invoicing.
How long before launch should we start?
4–6 weeks pre-cutover is optimal. That gives us 5 business days to run the audit, then 2–4 weeks for your team (or ours) to execute the P0/P1 fixes and validate them on staging before DNS switch.
What do we need to hand over?
Read-only GSC access, Ahrefs access (or a $199 pass-through), your current-site CMS admin (or crawl allowance), the target-platform staging URL + admin, and 30 minutes of your engineering lead + 30 minutes of your marketing lead in the kickoff call. That’s it.
