Profound Alternatives for GEO Tracking: An Honest Comparison

A content lead at a Series B fintech company sat through a Profound demo in August, watched the agent-level citation breakdown, and walked away convinced. Then she took the quote back to her VP of Marketing and got a reasonable question in return: is this the only option, or did we just buy the first thing a sales rep showed us?

That’s the position most B2B marketing teams are in right now. Generative engine optimization tracking tools multiplied fast over the past eighteen months, and the category is still consolidating. HubSpot’s October 2025 acquisition of XFunnel, an answer engine optimization startup, is a clear signal that standalone GEO vendors are already becoming acquisition targets for the larger marketing suites (HubSpot’s own announcement confirms the deal and its intent to fold XFunnel’s monitoring into HubSpot’s marketing products). Before locking into a multi-year data history with any one vendor, it’s worth knowing what the real alternatives measure, how they bill, and where each one actually fits.

This isn’t a listicle ranking of “best GEO tools.” It’s a direct comparison of Profound against three tools teams most often shortlist against it, built on a framework for normalizing what each one actually charges you for, since the pricing pages alone don’t make that comparable.

What GEO tracking tools actually measure

A GEO (generative engine optimization) tracking tool runs a defined set of prompts against AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Copilot, and Claude, then logs whether and how your brand or content gets cited in the response. That’s structurally different from classic rank tracking, which checks your position on a results page that exists independently of any one query’s phrasing. An AI engine’s answer is generated fresh for every prompt, so tracking tools have to sample repeatedly, on a cadence, to produce a trend instead of a single data point.

That sampling is also why these tools are expensive to run at scale, and why their pricing models differ so much from each other’s. Before comparing vendors line by line, it helps to have one framework for what to actually compare.

The COVER framework for comparing GEO tools

We built this framework after normalizing four vendors’ pricing pages against each other for this piece, because none of their marketing sites make the comparison easy on purpose. Five factors determine what a tool will actually cost you and whether it will answer the question your leadership is asking.

C
Coverage
Which answer engines are included by default, and which (Gemini, Claude, AI Mode) cost extra as add-ons.
O
Output unit
Whether you’re billed per prompt, per “check,” per credit, or per domain. This is the unit that actually drives cost.
V
Velocity
Refresh cadence per prompt: daily, weekly, or on-demand. A monthly refresh can’t support a weekly ops review.
E
Export
API or CSV access to raw data, independent of the vendor’s own dashboard. Matters most if the vendor gets acquired.
R
Revenue link
Whether AI visibility data connects to referral traffic or conversion data (e.g., GA4), or stays a standalone score.

Profound vs. the three tools teams actually shortlist against it

Pricing below comes from each vendor’s own pricing or help pages where it was directly accessible, with third-party review sites (Capterra, G2) used only to corroborate figures that weren’t published on the vendor’s own page. Figures change, so confirm current pricing before you commit a budget line.

Tool Entry price Billing unit Default engine coverage Best fit
Profound Free trial; Enterprise is custom-quoted Tracked prompts + Agent credits 3 engines on trial (ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews); up to 9 on Enterprise, incl. Claude and DeepSeek Teams reporting AI visibility to the C-suite as its own line item
Ahrefs Brand Radar From $50/mo (free on Ahrefs Lite+) “Checks” (prompt × platform × day) 6+ platforms on the full Index; fewer on entry tiers Teams already paying for Ahrefs who want AI data next to existing keyword and backlink data
Otterly.ai ~$29/mo (Lite, 15 prompts) Search prompts Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, MS Copilot; Gemini, AI Mode, Claude cost extra Early-stage teams tracking a small, fixed prompt set on a tight budget
Semrush AI Toolkit Reported ~$99/mo per domain Per-domain add-on Bundled reporting (Visibility Overview, Prompt Tracking, AI-readiness audit) Teams already on Semrush who want directional AI visibility inside their existing SEO workflow

Sources: Profound’s pricing page, Ahrefs Brand Radar’s product page, Otterly.ai’s help center pricing article corroborated against Capterra and G2 listings, and multiple independent reviewer write-ups of Semrush’s AI Visibility Toolkit (vendor page unconfirmed at time of writing).

Why the sticker price is the wrong number to compare

The table above already shows the trap: Otterly’s $29 and Ahrefs’ $50 entry points look cheaper than Profound’s enterprise quote, but they’re not tracking the same thing. A team that needs daily checks across six platforms for 50 prompts will blow through Otterly’s bundled engine list and Ahrefs’ check allowance long before they get there, while Profound’s Enterprise tier is quoted assuming that volume from the start.

The mockup below illustrates how this plays out using a hypothetical, invented scenario: a 40-prompt tracking set, checked daily, across the four platforms most B2B teams care about first (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini). It is not pulled from any client account.

Illustrative Example, Not Real Client Data
Estimated monthly cost: 40 prompts, daily checks, 4 platforms
Otterly.ai (Premium + 2 add-ons)~$640/mo
Ahrefs Brand Radar (AI Visibility Index + overage)~$735/mo
Semrush AI Toolkit (reported entry + seats)~$560/mo
Profound (Enterprise, quoted at this volume)~$1,100/mo*
*Profound’s Enterprise tier is sales-quoted and not published; this figure is an estimate for illustration, not a quote, and should not be treated as Profound’s actual price.

At this specific volume, the gap narrows and the dedicated platform’s deeper agent-level analytics can justify the premium. At a smaller volume, say 10 prompts on two platforms, the gap stays wide and a bundled add-on is the more defensible budget line. Run your own prompt count and platform list through each vendor’s actual calculator before presenting a number to finance.

A simple decision guide

  • You’re pre-Series B and GEO is one KPI among several: start with the SEO suite add-on you already pay for (Ahrefs Brand Radar or Semrush AI Toolkit) rather than adding a new vendor.
  • You have a defined, large prompt set and AI citations report up to the CMO or board: a dedicated platform like Profound is more likely to justify its cost, provided you’ve confirmed what Enterprise actually includes for your volume.
  • Budget is the binding constraint and you track fewer than 20 prompts: Otterly’s Lite tier is the lowest list price, but price out the Gemini and AI Mode add-ons before you commit, since most B2B buyer research now touches those engines too.
  • You’re worried about vendor lock-in or a future acquisition: confirm API or CSV export in the sales conversation before signing, not after. The HubSpot/XFunnel deal is a reminder that this market is still consolidating.

This comparison sits downstream of a broader question: what should any GEO tool actually be measuring in the first place. Our GEO tools evaluation framework walks through the vendor scorecard we use before any tool, including the four above, gets a recommendation. If you’d rather skip the vendor research and get a read on where your own brand currently stands across these engines, our AI analytics setup and monitoring service builds the tracking layer around whichever tool fits your stage, rather than selling you the platform first and the strategy second.

Not sure which tier of tool fits your current prompt volume and budget? Start with a GEO audit to get a baseline citation map before you commit to a monthly platform cost, or book a call to walk through your specific engine and budget mix.
